दोस्तों! आज हम आप को एक ऐसी कहानी सुनाने जा रहे हैं जिसका महत्व देश की आजादी की कहानी से तनिक भी कम नहीं है। यूँ तो बिहार ने आजादी की लड़ाई में भी कम योगदान नहीं दिया है बल्कि उसका योगदान सबसे ज्यादा रहा है , लेकिन देश को बिहार का यह योगदान तो अभूतपूर्व है। एक आजादी महात्मा गाँधी ने दिलाई तो दूसरी आजादी बिहार के बिन्देश्वरी पाठक ने दिलाई। लेकिन इनका नाम बहुत कम लोगों को पता होगा क्योंकि लोगों को इनके काम के महत्व का पता नहीं है। मेरी यह कहानी उनके काम के महत्व को उजागर करती है। शहरी जिन्दगी की एक महत्वपूर्ण परेशानी को हल किया बिन्देश्वरी पाठक ने। आप ध्यान से आगे की कहानी पढ़ें तो आप उनके काम के महत्व को समझ सकते हैं। यह कहानी मेरे एक मित्र अक्सर सुनाया करते थे, यह उनकी आपबीती तो थी ही, कहीं न कहीं आप और हम सब की भी आपबीती है।
घटना गोरखपुर की है, १९८६ का मई का महीना था। उन दिनों यूनिवर्सिटी के आस-पास का इलाका आज की तरह आबाद नहीं हुआ करता था, और न तो आज की तरह आवागमन के साधन ही मौजूद थे, और तो और आज की तरह सार्वजनिक सौचालयों की सुविधा भी मौजूद नहीं थी। वे मित्र उन दिनों विश्वविद्यालय के नवनियुक्त लेक्चरर थे और सूरजकुंड कालोनी में रहा करते थे, गोरखपुर से परिचित लोगों को पता होगा कि इनके बीच कि दूरी लगभग ४ किलोमीटर होगी। हाँ तो हुआ ये कि उस दिन विश्वविद्यालय में एक सेमिनार आयोजित था, और वे मित्र बतौर श्रोता मौजूद थे। अभी सेमिनार चल ही रहा था कि उनको अचानक हाजत महसूस हुई। तमाम सरकारी संस्थानों कि तरह ही विश्वविद्यालय के शौचालय भी दयनीय हालत में थे मेरे मित्र इस बात से अच्छी तरह परिचित थे। तो प्रश्न यहाँ था कि ऐसी हालत में किया क्या जाय? कुछ सोच-विचार के बाद तय यह हुआ कि घर ही चला जाय, और तत्काल ही इस पर अमल किया। सेमिनार हल से बाहर निकले और तेजी से स्टैंड की तरफ़ लपक लिए। स्टैंड में उनकी वो स्कूटर ऊँघ रही थी जो उनको उनके पिता जी ने हाईस्कूल फर्स्ट डिविजन लाने पर दिया था। स्कूटर के पास पहुँचे तो गर्मी की वजह से पहियों की हवा निकल चुकी थी। अब फिर वाही सवाल सामने था, क्या किया जाय? खैर वहाँ से बाहर निकल कर रिक्शा की तलाश शुरू की, लेकिन मई की उस दोपहरी में रिक्शा मिलना आसान नहीं था। बहरहाल एक रिक्शा मिल ही गया, और "यात्रा" शुरू हुई। तब तक पेट के निचले हिस्से में दबाव कुछ और बढ़ गया था। रिक्शा कुछ दूर चला था कि उसकी चेन उतर गई, मित्र बोले, "अरे भाई क्या करते हो? चलो जल्दी करो मेरी हालत को समझो, मेरी हालत बहुत ख़राब हो रही है, और वाकई उनकी हालत ख़राब थी, आप समझ सकते हैं उनकी हालत को, अगर आप शहर के रहने वाले हैं तो कभी न कभी आप भी इस हालत से दो-चार हुए ही होंगे। लेकिन क्या करें? एक तो दोपहर की गर्मी दूसरे पछुआ हवा विपरीत दिशा से आ रही थी, तीसरे रिक्शे की चेन थी कि बार-बार उतर जाती थी। उधर उनकी हालत लगातार ख़राब होती जा रही थी। बार-बार रिक्शे वाले की मिन्नत करते की भाई जल्दी कर मेरी तबियत ख़राब हो रही है।
कुछ देर में रिक्शा विजय चौक पहुँच गया। वहां एक ठंडे की दुकान पर एक सज्जन खड़े मिल गये। वे उनके दूर के रिश्ते में साले लगते थे। इनको देखा तो बोले अरे प्रोफेसर आओ भाई कुछ ठंडा-वंडा हो जाए बहुत दिनों के बाद मिले हो। मित्र बोले भाई आज माफ़ करो ठंडा किसी और दिन होगा, आज तो दिन बहुत ख़राब है। साले साहब बोले " तुम साले टीचरों की जात बहूत कन्जूस है आओ पी लू पेमेंट मैं कर रहा हूँ, इतनी गर्मी में थोड़ी तबियत हरी हो जायेगी।" प्रोफेसर बोले नहीं भाई आज मेरी हालत बहुत ख़राब है, मुझे जल्दी घर पहुंचना है। साले साहब आज आसानी से पीछा छोड़ने के मूड में नहीं थे, बोले नहीं आज तो ऐसे नहीं जाने दूँगा बहुत दिनों बाद मिले हो कम से कम एक गिलास लस्सी तो हो ही जाय। मित्र अब तो आगबबूला हो गये, बोले मुझे नहीं पीनी लस्सी-वस्सी, तूँ आज से मेरा साला नहीं, मैं तेरा जीजा नहीं, और गुस्से से लाल-पीले होते रिक्सेवाले को डांटा "आबे तूँ क्यों रिक्सा रोक के खड़ा हो गया? बढ़ा आगे जल्दी कर रस्ते में अभी कुछ हो गया तो कौन जिम्मेदार होगा? रिक्सावाला बिना कुछ खे रिक्सा आगे बढ़ा दिया। साले साहब अपना सा मुह लिए खड़े रह गये, सोचने लगे इनको आज क्या हो गया है? इधर गुस्सा करने के कारण इनकी हालत और गंभीर हो गई।

रिक्सा कुछ ही दूर और चला था कि उसकी चेन टूट गई। रिक्से वाला बोला साहब चेन टूट गई रिक्सा अब आगे नहीं जा सकता आप दूसरा रिक्सा कर लो। इस अचानक आई विपदा से प्रोफेसर खीज उठे। दूर-दूर तक किसी दूसरे रिक्से का नामोनिशान तक नहीं था। प्रोफेसर रूआसे से हो उठे। तभी एक दूसरा रिक्सा दिखा, वह बिचारा बूढ़ा था बड़ी मुस्किल से तैयार हुआ। उल्टी हवा बहुत तेज चल रही थी, रिक्सा चला तो सही पर उल्टी हवा के कारण जितना आगे जाता उतना ही पीछे आ जाता। बूढा बेचारा अपनी पूरी ताकत लगा रहा था पर रिक्सा आगे जाने का नाम ही नहीं लेता। प्रोफेसर बार-बार कहते अरे चाचा जल्दी करो मेरी इज्जत कपड़े और तुम्हारा रिक्सा तीनों ख़राब हुआ चाहते हैं। दया करो, जल्दी पहुँचाओ। और उनकी हालत वाकई दयनीय हो चुकी थी।
किसी तरह रिक्सा घर के दरवाजे पर पहुँचा। जल्दी से रिक्से से उतरे और कालबेल बजाई साथ ही दरवाजे पर थाप भी। श्रीमती जी दोपहर की नींद ले रहीं थीं, घबराई सी उठीं कि इस समय कौन हो सकता है? जो इतनी जोर से दरवाजा पीट रहा है। किसी तरह कुछ हिम्मत इकट्ठी कर के आवाज लगाई, "कौन है?" प्रोफेसर चीखे पूछ-ताछ बाद में करना पहले दरवाजा खोलो। श्रीमती जी और घबरा गईं, सोचने लगीं कि आवाज तो प्रोफेसर की लगती है पर यह तो उनके आने का समय नहीं है। घबराहट में दरवाजे की सिटकनी ही नहीं मिल रही थी। किसी तरह दरवाजा खुला और प्रोफेसर धक्का सा देते हुए तेजी से टायलट रूम की तरफ़ भागे। पर यह क्या? टायलट का दरवाजा भीतर से बंद। जोर से बोले भीतर कौन है? जल्दी निकल। पर आवाज गले में ही फंस कर रह गई। श्रीमती जी को अब कुछ-कुछ समझ में आया बोली पप्पू है। प्रोफेसर बोले अबे पप्पू जल्दी निकल नहीं तो अभी दरवाजा तोड़ कर तेरी ऐसी-तैसी कर दूँगा, पप्पू उनका ८ सल् का बेटा, पापा की कड़कती आवाज सुनी तो उसकी आधी भीतर आधी बाहर हाथ में हाफ पैंट उठाए जल्दी से रोनी सूरत बहार निकलभागा। प्रोफेसर भीतर पहुंचे और चैन की साँस लेकर दरवाजा बंद किया।
उन दिनों लक्स, डोरा या और किसी इलास्टिक वाले अण्डर गारमेन्ट का बहुत प्रचलन नहीं था, लोगबाग कपड़ा ले कर दरजी से नाड़े वाला कच्छा सिला कर पहना करते थे, और उसका नाड़ा अक्सर ऐसे क्रिटिकल पोजीशन में फंस जाया करता था। मेरा ख़याल है कि इलास्टिक के अण्डर गारमेन्ट के निर्माताओं के साथ भी ऐसा ही कुछ कभी न कभी हुआ होगा और उन्हों ने कसम खाई होगी "कसम खता हूँ इस उलझे हुए नाड़े का कि अण्डर गारमेन्ट से नाड़े का समूल नाश कर के ही रहूँगा।" खैर प्रोफेसर का नाड़ा भी फंस गया। अब तो उनकी उनकी हालत अत्यंत ही नाजुक हो गई थी। भीतर का दबाव मुहाने तक आ गया था, और अब निकला कि तब निकला। फंसी-फंसी सी में पूरा जोर लगा कर चिल्लाये अजी चाकू लाओ जल्दी। श्रीमती जी ने सुना तो बेहद घबरा गईं। घबराहट में चाकू ही नहीं मिल था, इधर प्रोफेसर पूरा जोर लगा कर नाड़ा तोड़ने का प्रयास कर रहे थे। लेकिन जब नाड़े पर जोर लगायें तो भीतर का प्रेशर बाहर आने लगे और जब प्रेशर रोकें तो नाड़े पर जोर ढीला हो जाये। कुल मिलाकर नाड़ा उनसे बीस ही पड़ता था। किसी तरह चाकू मिला नाड़ा कटा और इसी के साथ प्रोफेसर भी ढीले हो गये। उनके मन में आया कि अगर कहीं स्वर्ग है तो यहीं है, यहीं है, यहीं है।
तो भाइयों अब आप समझ सकते हैं कि शहर में सार्वजनिक सुलभशौचालयों का क्या महत्व है, शायद बिन्देश्वरी पाठक भी ऐसी ही किसी मुसीबत से दो-चार हुए होंगे और उन्हों ने सुलभइंटरनेशनल के नाम से एक संस्था बना डाली और पूरे देश में जगह-जगह सुलभ शौचालय के नाम से सार्वजनिक शौचालय बनवाडाला क्या उनका काम महात्मा गाँधी के काम से कम महत्व का है?
